Opening of the First Clubhouse

This photo shows the official opening of the first surf club building, including the dressing sheds, in early 1934 by the Hon. J.M.Dunningham. Designed by architect Bertram Ford, it cost around 2,000 pounds (4,000 dollars).

Note the generous volume of sand at the time, compared with later years, as the conditions continue to fluctuate. Note also the height of the 12-year-old Norfolk Island pine trees.

The Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Club celebrated its centenary on the October long weekend, 2025.
