Delecta Avenue
This detail from Arthur Rickard’s ‘Pearl of Pittwater Estate’ subdivision plan shows the view in 1920 from Hudson Parade down Delecta Avenue towards the present-day turning circle and boat launching area adjacent to the car park. The original Clareville Beach store and post office once occupied the site on the left and for some years […]
The Vale of Avalon
This unique photo is one of our favourites and is a one-third part of a panorama shot from the present roundabout at ‘Kamikaze Corner’ in late 1921. (Old) Barrenjoey Road sweeps from left to right as it climbs over the crest near Central Road in the distance. A.J.Small is in the process of clearing the […]
Old Barrenjoey Road
This north-east view along (Old) Barrenjoey Road was taken in 1923. Sanders Lane is yet to be formed as is The Crescent. In the left of the picture is the first general store on the corner of Avalon Parade and (Old) Barrenjoey Road which at that stage would have been open for around 18 month […]
Christmas Meeting
We finished the year in a big way with 63 locals attending the last meeting of the year – not bad for a local historical society! All enjoyed the 60 ‘digital slides’ which made up the ‘Ye Olde Slide Night’ at the mighty ‘Avalon Bowlo’. Everyone raved about the special Christmas fare for supper – Collette’s […]
Early Golf Course
This photo of the golf course appears to have been taken around 1928, the year when the (new) Barrenjoey Road was made around the top of the course. It shows the old 7th hole, which is now the 8th and the longest hole on the course and was taken adjacent to Old Barrenjoey Road. The […]
Where is this?
These 2 photos were found in an unwanted folder at Barrenjoey High School. The folder contained documents pertaining to Avalon Beach and it is thought the 2 photos were taken here. We are hoping someone out there might recognise either people in the photos, where the houses might have been (or still are!) and any […]

First School Building
The first headmaster of Avalon Public School, Les McGuire, stands rather disconcertedly amongst the debris that would become the first playground and assembly area. The building was a ‘demountable’ and lay in parts in mud during some heavy rain in June and July until the weather cleared to enable construction. The telegraph poles behind the […]
Official Public School Opening
This photo shows pupils marching south along Old Barrenjoey Road through the shopping centre to the school on official opening day 26 May 1951. Woolworths now occupy the site of the Avalon Milk Bar and General Store on the north-east corner of the intersection with Avalon Parade. The teacher is probably Mr Jim Lane.
