First School Building

The first headmaster of Avalon Public School, Les McGuire, stands rather disconcertedly amongst the debris that would become the first playground and assembly area. The building was a ‘demountable’ and lay in parts in mud during some heavy rain in June and July until the weather cleared to enable construction. The telegraph poles behind the bulldozer mark the line of Old Barrenjoey Road.

  1. Haha yes!! ” Mr McGuire your pants are on fire” I’m sure every kid that went to that school would’ve said that phrase. Funny how early memories can come back when triggered.
